Could Atheism be described as a 'label' you would apply to a person?

I'm trying to work out why somebody would think that it's not a 'label' when it clearly categorises a person as one who does not believe in gods. I put label in quotes because the word label is the issue here. I'll add more details if necessary. This perhaps belongs in words and wordplay or whatever the category but R&S fits too.
